Biology of type IV filamentous (Tff) nanomachines

Bacteria have evolved a variety of macromolecular nanomachines that allow them to interact efficiently with their environment, including with their host for pathogenic species. Type IV filamentous (Tff) nanomachines such as Type 2 Secretion (T2S) and Type 4 Piliation (T4P) systems are centered on dynamic filaments composed of type IV pilins. They are involved in a vast array of function including, protein secretion, adhesion to surfaces, surface-associated motility, electrical conductivity or uptake of DNA.
