Oceans and seas cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. Marine microbes play a pivotal role in the biogeochemistry and productivity of the oceans, which influence Earth’s environmental dynamics and human life. While their activity has a global impact, marine microbes experience extremely heterogeneous and ephemeral nutrient gradients at microzone levels that are exposed to steady or intermittent fluid motion driven by currents and turbulence. Connecting the events happening at two extreme size-scales, we are studying the mechanism and environmental significance of flagellum-propelled motion and the biogeochemical contribution of marine magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) with multiple disciplinary approaches including physics, microscopy, bacteriology, molecular biology, biochemistry and genomics.
